This is how I picture Bolin and Mako
Mako depends upon Bolin more than most people realize, is how I view it
Just as how Mako protects Bolin, Bolin lets him, because he realizes it’s at least due in part to Mako being unable to ever fully get over the fact that he was unable to protect his parents.
Even though he was 8 years old and had just started learning how to firebend, and there was no earthly way he could have saved his parents.
